*We Were Totally Googling Youtube Clips Before We Even Finished Watching Justice’s New Video

ab_jp_DSC_0027.jpg

So in a red letter week that marks the release of both GTA IV AND the end of school, Justice has proffered their new video ‘Stress’ to the masses. My first reaction was all like Cool! A guerilla story line shot from the hip, just what this song needs!

But pretty most things begin with these two classics - First, I give you the

So the next time some dude in a bar tries to pick you up by referencing

Nod and smile but just remember where this stuff REALLY came from. Shooting in streets and stairwells and stations with everyday people and natural lighting wasn’t optional, it was the only way in a war-torn city with a devestated working class. And they ended up with like utterly triumphant films. Much respect to the people that put the Vérité in cinema. Holla.

Where’d the Kooks Go? While we’re at it, let’s watch that PopWorld Q&A w/ Simon Amstell again!

KsBow_color_12.jpg

Someone asked me where the Kooks were the other day, and I was like ‘Hmm. Good question.’ There was that whole ‘Mick Rock to hit the road with them’ thing, and then some NYC shows that the Anglopheliacs were creaming themselves to get into, and then poof! They vanished back in studio. Never fear, they’ve got a string of radio-sponsored appearances (you gotsta love those radio mega holiday lineups) lined up on our fair shores next month with an album release set for Spring of 2008. Oh, said person also asked where the Kooks got their name from- look no further than this bumbly tune:

David Bowie : Kooks Mp3

Here’s one for the road~

The Kooks : Naive Mp3

The Kooks December 2007 Tour Dates:

14 Boulder, CO - KBCO Holiday Concert Series

Let’s Review: Where the Hell is Lily Allen & Take a Closer Look at That Kaiser Chiefs Cover Video!

Okay, let me get something offa my chest~ basically come May through October our heads are buried in festival season and, unless we’ve seen a band live, it’s usually hard for us to follow their ups and downs from a distance. Luckily the Mid-Fall tour circuit kicks in and we’ll be on the receiving end of bitchsmack reminder (driven home by a Disconapper screaming in our ear) how amazing an album really is. Hence, Mark Ronson’s Versions. SO GOOD. Definitely one of my top 10 of 2007, ESPECIALLY after that amazing show at Webster (still stumped as to why Tiggers looks sooo familiar tho).

On another note, where has Lily Allen gone (long, long ago)? Seems like just yesterday she was in our fair city giving NY Magazine a day to remember and bragging how she was spending studio time making youtube clips, instead of working on the next album. Next thing we know she’s on the other side of the pond, skinny (thanks to hypnotism making her look forward to the gym), and snogging a Chemical Brother. Well, it was confirmed on Friday that she is NOT going to be the new face of Agent Provocateur, although I wouldn’t put it past them with the prior campaigns- Maggie Gyllenhaal et al. Maybe it was the third nipple. ANYWAY, even better our princess of TMI is now the proud owner of her own TV show on BBC 3 entitled ‘Lily Allen and Friends.’ We think she’ll be perfect.

So, just to refresh your memory, here is the video for her cover of the Kaiser Chief’s ‘Oh My God’ which, we ermmmm, hadn’t given our proper attention to thanks to, you guessed it, festival season. Let’s face it, you can’t lose with a secret knock for a speakeasy, a midget-magician doorman and a Jessica Rabbit worthy avatar. WAIT A MINUTE- what’s with the lack of leading ladies in his videos? We all can *sigh* understand la Crackhouse not showing up for Valerie, but no Lily? Hmmmmm. This way they can draw her in high heels instead of hightops I s’pose. ANYWAY, keep an eye peeled for a chopstick wielding Daniel Merriweather and some great method acting by none other than our favorite boys, the Kaiser Chiefs! I’d say the oscar goes to Peanut. Ricky just looks confused and Nick is totally focusing on the wrong spot. That’s why P is on the receiving end of the flutter-kiss. Believe it! Here’s our <3 for you:

Let’s Review : The Elusive Sally Shapiro & Exclusive ‘He Keeps Me Alive’ MP3

sallyshapiro.jpg

So a couple of weeks ago we were kicking around this conspiracy theory that Sally Shapiro didn’t exist. This lovely Swede is ‘too shy to perform live,’ photos are hard to come by, and interviews, once scheduled, were transfered from phonecalls to email to IM sessions on someone else’s computer under different accounts. Not to mention the fact that Sally Shapiro isn’t her real name, and her songwriting partner and producer Johan Agebjorn also acts as her manager. Complete control! Could it be that we stumbled upon the JT Leroy of Neo-Italo Disco? Perhaps, or maybe our marathon ‘Sup sessions are making us a bit delerious. No, really, she’s had us since ‘Anorak Christmas.’ The release of Pitchfork endorsed ‘Disco Romance’ drops stateside this month on Paper Bag, and her people have assured us that photos from a video shoot will soon be available. Meanwhile enjoy this amazing track. It’s totally the audio equivalent of unicorns yay!

Let’s Review : Simian Mobile Disco : Why ‘I Believe’ Can Heal the World (Or Just the Dancefloor)

simian_gramercy_01.jpg

Ok, so rewind a bit. There was a phenomenal UK ‘experimentalist pop’ band called Simian on Astralwerks in the early ’00s. They had a crossover hit called ‘La Breeze’ off their ‘We Are Your Friends’ release (Yes, *that* ‘We Are Your Friends’- it was Justice’s remix of these guys that turned WAYF into THE dancefloor anthem of recent history, but that’s another post). After 2 albums of togetherness they decide to go their separate ways. Simon Lord peels off to form Black Ghosts and the 2 James-es (Ford and Campbell respectively) form Simian Mobile Disco. Not all is lost as both sides flourish and they still collaborate. Punkphoto’s fave cross-pollination endeavor outta the Simian legacy? The new single ‘I Believe’ (w/ Simon on vox) off SMD’s full length album (about time!) ‘Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release’ which is out now.

So this song is AMAZING. It’s intoxicating. It’s dangerous, and your neighbor is probably tooling a remix of it right now, because it seems like everyone and their mum already has (including Girl Talk, except it’s under a side project called ‘Trey Told ‘Em’). You know what? They’re all good. ‘I Believe’ is untouchable. I will fall in love with anything in a 3 foot radius when I hear this song. Witness the recap of my behavior during their live show at the Gramercy last Saturday:

Abbey: I love… carpet. [pause] I love… desk.
Cam: Abbey, are you just looking at things in the venue and saying that you love them?
Abbey: I love lamp.
Cam: Do you really love the lamp, or are you just saying it because you saw it?
Abbey: I love lamp. I love lamp.

So Ladies & Gents please enjoy the video as it took all my frigging willpower to stand still:

Who the F*ck is Biffy Clyro? Let’s Review: Plus North American Tour Dates & Video from Highline

Oh how that bumpersticker on the corner of North 9th and Bedford taunted me this summer every time I walked to McCarren park! Who the f*ck indeed is Biffy Clyro? We here at Punkphoto are here to clear it up for ya so let’s review….

bc_highline_0060.jpg

1) Biffy Clyro is not the name of the lead singer of this Scottish 3 piece outfit. It is twins Ben and James Johnston (drums and bass respectively) fronted by an axe-wielding (often shirtless, revealing tattoos of what appear to be Pet Sounds lyrics) Simon Neil.

2) Puzzle, their first album in 3 years, just might be the final push that will launch this threesome stateside. As the opening symphony of ‘Living Is a Problem Because Everything Dies’ gains momentum and starts to kick you in the head repeatedly one thing becomes very clear: whoever the f*ck Biffy Clyro is they’ve made one hell of an epic album. Arena rock is back, straight outta Glasgow and serving up power chords like no tomorrow. ‘Saturday Superhouse’ walks off with the prize.

3) The fact that ‘Machines’ could be a B-side off of Nirvana Unplugged (for REAL) can be chalked up to many things, one of which is that the album was mixed by Andy Wallace who worked with Kurt and co. Both legs of North American tour dates and video after the jump.

4) The fact that ‘Now I’m Everyone’ rocks out QotSA style, well, we weren’t the only ones that noticed it. These lads join Josh Homme and company on tour this fall (dates listed below). Puzzle drops stateside on September 18th on Roadrunner Records.

5) Please join me at their Webster Hall show on September 7th, and shake your head in wonder that they are ‘opening’ for the Editors. Watch out, you might get sweat on!
