We were first sucked in by Twin Sister’s intoxicating dreamscaped tracks this winter and… well let’s just say the buzz has grown into a roar and they are blowing up in a major way. Completely deserved of course! Come out to Glasslands tonight to celebrate the release of their album Color Your Life. These Long Island kids have been giving it away for free online (didn’t they listen to their mothers?) so this show is a celebration of hard copies courtesy of Infinite Best Recordings.
This is the newest installment in Tammy Hart and MyOpenBar.com’s Last Friday monthly concert series. Seeing as how MIA showed up to hop onstage with Sleigh Bells at last month’s showcase, this is one party you don’t want to miss. The band hits the road with Bear in Heaven in July, and be sure to keep an eye peeled on ‘SUP for more Twin Sister goodies. Happy first day of summer.
Re-hosted via ‘SUPmag, because they’re not on the Hype Machine, kay?
Here at ‘SUP, we’re big on any kind of “driving-with-the-top-down” music–the kind that makes you instinctively fist-pump and yell “SUMMER Of ‘98 WHOOOO WE’RE GONNA LIVE FOREVER YEAH!” However, we’d be remiss not to mention the “driving-with-the-window-cracked-(only a tiny bit because it’s freezing outside)-and-steering-with-your-knees-while-your-BFF-reaches-across-the-front-seat-ready-to-grab-the-wheel-because-you’re-busy-trying-to-smoke-a-bowl” category too. Takes you back, right?
Meet Jen Shag and John Shell, aka Shellshag. They’re based outta Brooklyn via San Francisco and put out awesome stuff like split 7-inches on their own label Starcleaner Records. They make music that is beautiful and broken and what we thought that Sonic Youth would sound like when we all grew up. It makes one simultaneously nostalgic for your teenage years and relieved that you’re nowhere frigging near them. In short, the perfect antidote to glo-fi, chillwave, and general malaise.
The band kicks off their Summer 2010 tour across North America this evening, with guest appearances by Signals, Jeremy Jay, Jeff the Brotherhood, Turbo Fruits, Bipolaroid and This Bike is a Pipe Bomb along the way. Shellshag’s third LP Rumors in Disguise is out now on Don Giovanni Records. Download this exclusive “Crashing Rockets” and go forth this Memorial Day weekend. For legal purposes, we ask that you refrain from steering with your knees. The rest is up to you.

Dear Alexis and Derek, I’m pretty sure that Will has Sleigh Bells on Google alert, so I’ll just post this in the open instead of cluttering up your inbox. I am so effing proud of you two and Treats is amazing. See you tonight.
PS- To my readers, yup this is just a stream. These are my friends and this is how they make a living, so please buy the album - you won’t regret it.
I KNOW RIGHT? ‘SUP will be representin’ at the Moneybrother Asbury Park show… because seriously WTF Sweden? Read Lou Wright’s album review of Real Control on ‘SUP *here*. PS I took this photo in like 2006, before the Joe Strummer memorial mural on the East 7th St side of Niagra Bar got the random ass color update with the blue skin. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS - no more makeovers!
There have been rumblings (and last minute guestlist requests- you know who i’m talking about) regarding LCD Soundsystem playing Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight. 1st off, CONGRATULATIONS LIGHT ASYLUM ON THE OPENING SLOT!!! DAMN! 2ndly, ‘SUP will be holding down the fort at Penguin Prison ’s Mercury gig across the river. Why? Well it’s Penguin’s first ever live show…. and the last time we saw LCD it was one of the most amazing experiences a concertgoer could ever ask for. Check video clips from string of last great NYC shows in 2007. When have you seen kids going that crazy at Bowery? PS this was the week I got my point and shoot camera with video capabilities and obvs hadn’t mastered the whole ‘filming the whole song’ bit yet. Let’s just say I came, I saw, I picked up the Planning To Rock t-shirt.
So the astoundingly amazing Janelle Monáe’s new video dropped last week for “Tightrope” (featuring Big Boi from you-know-who), and I remembered *cough* that I snagged some video footage from her parking lot performance at the Afro Punk festival last July. Here it is. For those that haven’t seen her in the flesh, brace yourself for an android loving, Colonel Sanders obsessed visionary who can break it down, high kick, moonwalk, and crowdsurf. Or as S/FJ simply observed at the same gig, “Snood looks like a lady.” For you NYC-ers out there, she plays Highline Ballroom April 8th, and Joe’s Pub the following 2 nights. Archandroid, her first full length (even though her Metropolis (Suite I: The Chase) EP was so meticulous if felt like a complete album) drops May 18th, 2010.
It was a tough choice that I actually mulled over for 12 days. I had a photopass for Hole at the Spin party- SCORE. I could either shoot from up close for 2 songs OR take a chance, get there 4 hours early, and try to find a spot up front to sneak video. Since my ultimate goal since day 1 with Punkphoto is to make people feel like they’re RIGHT THERE UP FRONT, I chose the latter. Cut to 7 of my friends in the photo pit turning around and asking if I’d lost my mind. One even felt my forehead for a fever. Anyway, I think I made out ok, with some still shots as well. The performance was PHENOMEAL- Courtney Love at her most resilient. She is back, and this new album is going to blow everyone’s minds (and pants) off.
Well you know the deal is, about fashion, is that proletariat male rock critics have a real bruce springsteen problem with like denim boomer issues… We as females have thousands and thousands of years of fashion in our DNA, we want to wear NICE FUCKING CLOTHES. IT’S PART OF WHAT WE DO! So I don’t have an issue with it. If you have an opportunity to go to the OSCARS in a FABULOUS GOWN and be ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS you’re going to FUCKING TAKE IT. I don’t have to like listen to a rule. Who made that rule? Some dumb guy… Amy I right? Oh yeah.
Kristoffer Borgli, mastermind behind the video for Donkeyboy’s “Ambitions” (aka one of our faves of last year) has helmed the vid for Casiokids‘ new single “En Vill Hest.” Yay! Yet again Borgli taps into that subtle Scandinavian sensibility of being so calm- YET SO COOL. Perhaps that’s why I often feel like the biggest spaz when I’m over there… nothing to do w/ the schnapps. Promise. At least Norwegians have nights where their TVs talk to them and their Cheerios strike back with a vengance like we do too. Check out the Oslo native’s show reel below, and download one of our fave CK singles while you’re at it. If you’re in the UK this month by all means dance don’t walk to the nearest Hot Chip gig and get their early for Casiokids. Their Moshi Moshi anniversary set at the Seaport Music Festival this summer was by far the best we’ve seen.
Working in the indie community and living in NYC often presents the amazing opportunity to pop up in Brooklyn DIY video crowd shots. Wheeee. Now having slept through/ spaced on the TVoTR, YYYs and Titus Andronicus shoots over the years, when Kanine Records enlisted friends and family for the Surfer Blood video for “Swim” I made it a point to show up. Seriously JP, Thomas, TJ, Brian and Marcos are stellar gentlemen with a massive future in front of ‘em and one of my fave bands ever to work with. Total pros. Please note that the end crowd surfing footage was taken during the encore of the New Year’s Eve Kanine Records beach party at Cameo gallery- click *here* to check some photos and vids from that event!
To get more info on the video masterminds behind this piece, visit http://www.neuefilms.com/- they did the awesome one for Blind Man’s Colour “Warm Currents Pull” as well.
