You Are A Girl Hitter

and obviously in search of some bad-ass hell raising press, which I’m not going to give you. Just know if you ever come near me again with anything other than an apology your unborn children will feel it. So when you feel like punctuating a set try picking on someone your own size, that’s like, […]

The Kooks Q&A :: by Amy Wagner

kooks_longshot.jpg

10.28.06

Brighton’s the Kooks are the last export from the U.K. to land on our shores. They want a piece of us and they’re not apologizing for it. They dropped their debut album Inside In / Inside Out (Virgin Records) on us on October 3rd and have been gigging around building up an already bursting at the scenes fan base. I sat down with the band’s guitarist Hugh Harris before their second of two sold-out NYC area shows to see if these new lads are worth forking over a few of our hard earned dollars for. Hint – it’s so worth living on peanut butter and jelly until the next paycheck as long as you have a Kooks shirt to wear, their album to listen to and a ticket stub from at least one of their shows.

Punk Photo: Tell us about the moment when you realized the four of you playing together had the potential to be something special.

Hugh Harris: From really our first rehearsal. We’ve been in various different bands before we got into this one, but I think the moment when we noticed something different happening was when we first started playing gigs. With a gig, you can really see how the music translates to other people and, by seeing people go mad for us, that’s the only way you can really judge it.

PP: What’s the biggest difference between what really being in a band is like versus what you thought being in a band would be like when you imagined it as a kid?

Heard It Through the Bassline !!!!

slits_bw.jpg

Dispite the atrocious sound last night at The Knit (WTF???) The Slits absolutely killed it. Their Dub and Afro-pop pedigree shone through with lead singer Ari-Up delivering a bouncing set with the verve of an aerobics instructor that had just smoked up behind the water fountain. Tessa’s cool demeanor made her mad bassline delivery that much more killer. I almost lost it when they broke into ‘Typical Girls,’ and I totes lost it when they ripped into ‘Shoplifing.’ Check-check ‘em out!

The Voyage of The Carcass :: Post CMJ Re-charge Suggestion

home_bkgd.jpg

Frankly, you had me at the name. Thanks to our fave biz whiz kids at Shaw Promotion we ventured out to a non-musical show last weekend to fantastic results: The Voyage of The Carcass. In tow was our ‘dude let’s try not going to a concert’ partner-in-crime International Rock Star. Think a play-within-a-play set against an Arctic Voyage as seen by Drama majors that have a hard time leaving the collegate days behind. Seriously we were weeping like 2 minutes into the show, and basically spent the night dissolving into giggles as the story, and the egos, collapses in on itself. The last time I saw such great use of physical comedy was that food-seduction scene in Tom Jones. Okay just re-read the post and it’s coming off as kind of lame, just trust us it rocks. No excuses, Soho Playhouse is right off the C train. Looking very forward to more of Stage 13 productions!
