It’s NEVER Boring By the Sea- or Anywhere Else For That Matter- With Blood Red Shoes Around….

brs_press_abbeybraden.jpg

Nicking whiskey, standing up to bouncers, bones sticking out of wounds, and almost falling naked off a glass roof when locked out of a hotel? Classic hardcore tales from Blood Red Shoes. She Writes Rock did it again. Check out an amazing Q&A *here* on ‘Sup! Check out the video of ‘It’s Getting Boring By the Sea’ from their first US gig at Highline below:

Free Blood Q&A by Abbey Braden : Sing These Songs Along To Your Car Alarms : 8/25 at Studio B

John Pugh is an illusionist mural artist based out of Los Gatos, California. His trompe l’oeil pieces grace the Oncology Wing at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. His work can also be found on the public library in Rotorua, New Zealand, as well as the private residences of Barbi Benton AND Debra Winger! Dig around and articles entitled ‘Can You Trompe This?’ and ‘Optical Delusions’ pop up. As much as I hate to let y’all down (because you KNOW the q&a would be the shiz), he’s not the John Pugh we’re looking to interview. Nope, the one we are in search of is far more elusive, even more awesome, and in possession of just an expansive body of work. When combined with Madeline Davy (and, early on but not anymore Dan Gorman) this John Pugh makes up the apocalyptic house party known as Free Blood. It’s a red-headed step child side project siphoned off of !!! & a fabulous clothing line called Octopi. Sing these songs along to your car alarms, you’re never gonna be the same.

Free Blood : The Royal Family mp3

FreeBlood_Knit_35.jpg

Hey guys! Let’s talk about how Free Blood came into play. Did your eyes meet across a crowded karaoke bar in Singapore circa 1977, or should we save that for the movie version?

FREE BLOOD WAS AN EXPERIMENT IN PARTY POLITICS AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE. WE SOUGHT OUT THE DEPRAVED AND AWKWARD IN ALL SOCIAL SITUATIONS. WE USED PHEROMONES AS A WEAPON. WE DANCED AT SO HARD WE WOKE UP WITH FURNITURE STUCK BETWEEN OUR TEETH. WE THOUGHT MAYBE A MUSICAL OUTLET WOULD KEEP US FROM REVELLING OURSELVES TO AN EARLY GRAVE. FREE BLOOD HAS SUCCESSFULLY REVERSED THE AGING PROCESS. WE RECOMMEND IT TO ALL POST-PUBESCENT ADULTS. …(click title to read more)

New Fave Band :: Video from the Wombats at the Annex NYC :: August 15 2007 by Abbey Braden

Cameron says: ‘Sounding like the Futureheads’ young nephews on caffeine pills (complete with jerky riffs and vocal harmonies), The Wombats are well-versed in that kind of songwriting that sounds as if it were ripped directly from their diaries. It’s clear that their main objective as a band is to write songs about girls and dancing, and in a world where everyone and their mother finds it necessary to be as high-concept as possible, it’s kind to refreshing to not give a fuck and jump around for a while.’ Read the rest of the proper review w/ more of my photos on ‘Sup Magazine’s behalf *here*
wombats_1.jpg

Just of the top of my head why the Wombats are great:
1) The Buckaroo Bonzai hair combined with a flower decoupaged Fender
2) Their enthusiasm: like
the Klaxons before they toured 5 billion times
3) The mascot- how many ‘The’ bands have their direct objects onstage?
4) They play so hard their pants fall down and will be back in February!

So in honor of the great Tony Wilson, here is ‘Let’s Dance to Joy Division’

White Stripes at Madison Square Garden Review is Up at Ice Cream Man !!

070820_white_stripes_braden.jpg

Have you ever really loved a band only to have them abandon you? I’m talking extensive periods of standing on your head until your friends bought the album, obsessive mix tape swaps of rare tracks, insisting that your local record store carry their stuff, and a full on scavenger hunt for some sort of insight into their elusive background. Then have you ever watched that band you love so much rise in popularity and reach a level that you can pretty much kiss off finding concert tickets for their sold out arena shows? For me that band is Read the rest the White Stripes, and witnessing their stratospheric (and well deserved) rise to fame has been bittersweet. So color me a peppermint twist when I found myself in the photo pit for their Madison Square Garden show. Crossing the country for the billionth time in support of their new release Icky Thump, I couldn’t wait to see a post-Raconteurs Jack White back to his old tricks with his ‘big sister Meg.’
