Best-Shoes-At-Merc-EVER: An Impressive Lykke Li Thrills the Crowd at Mercury Lounge 10-30-07

lykkeli-mercurylounge20.jpg

Yes fantastic shoes yet so much more. Frankly I didn’t know what to expect, especially coupled with the release of Sally Shapiro’s LP the very same day. There was a huge potential for Lykke Li to slide sweetly into the category of Barely Legal Scandinavian Bubblegum Pop-dom, but that notion dissolved as she bounced onstage, grabbed the mic, and unfurled ‘Little Bit’ for our benefit. The delivery was masterful, the lyrics absolutely killer, and she won over the audience in a split second. Very impressive. Oh, and ‘Li’ is not her last name, and yes, her producer or whatever was there. That’s the million dollar question I got smacked with when I headed to Cakeshop afterwards. How many projects is that? There’s the first which introduced him into the American mainstream, then Maria told me she saw him in a Teddybear head (even though I swear they’re mostly mostly Caesars), and then I hear there’s a jazz project as well. Ok enough hot linking and shout-outs. Head on over to *Stereogum* for the rest of the review, but stick around here for more photos. Shooooes!

Yup, It’s Official : Amy Winehouse Not Headlining MTVU 2007 Woodie Awards; Replacement TBD

amy_horiz_2.jpg

So not suprised but still sad… La Winehouse is officially NOT headlining the MTV U Woodie Awards at Roseland next week. The press release mentions (cough) visa issues. The past ceremonies have presented strong lineups so it’s just a matter of seeing who’s in the city next Thursday (Here’s my duh conjecture: Peter & Bjorn are probs in town). In regards to that Gawker Stalker post that pegged Amy in my hood yesterday? [St Marks Pl & 2nd Ave Oct 30th, 2007 “Spotted amy winehouse crossing 2nd avenue, heading west on st marks around 9:30pm. She was looking all amy winehouse-y. In a coat rocking all black, but her hair wasn’t up in that beehive she usually rocks. She’s pretty tall, or were those heels?”] Ummmm, let me wish you a Happy Halloween my friend. Happy Halloween here too… and on an upnote, you can still vote for the MTVU Woodie Awards 2007 *HERE* if you are a college student, or like to pretend that you are. You sickos.

PS- Tokyo Police Club added to the lineup. Yay! ALSO: In regards to my call that P & B are natural replacements, look no further than the fabulous Tashed for featuring this in their weekly Friday-I’m-In-Love-Remix post mashup by DJ TopCat:

View the full set *HERE* and keep an eye peeled on ICM for the greatest review of all time. Ok, so night 4 at Hammerstein kicked off with ambulances and police cars waiting outside, a gurney waiting backstage, and two full fleged fist fights (1 of which had someone strangling another dude and dangling him backwards over the balcony) that I witnessed. It’s MOZZER people. Just…. full of hardcore Mozzer fans I suppose. Here’s the setlist and then video for ‘Please Please Please’ and ‘Find Out For Yourself’ after the jump w/ more photos. Add this to the screening of Control (SPOILER ALERT: Ian Curtis Dies in the end) on Friday? Only the Go! Team can save me now! Calling all fun kids to Studio B tonight yo!!!!!!!!

CMJ WRAP UP 2007 : Highs & Lows, Border Patrol, Pissed We Missed, Rad Covers, & Best ‘Worm’

SO YES. Hi, we’re back. Wanna know why we’re still smiling like dorks? The danceoff that was Thursday, October 18th, aka our top reason why we skipped Iceland Airwaves, left our legs numb. It kicked off with Walter Meego at Webster, and we dashed up to the Blender Gramercy Theater for Datarock, then back to Webster for U.N.K.L.E. We sprinted for the L Train to Brooklyn and swung by Simian Mobile Disco, and then began the long trek down Wythe to Studio B to land front and center for Muscles’ North American Debut, and New Young Pony Club. The next night we saw M.I.A. and then the night that followed, Justice. Don’t even get us started on the day showcases, which all flowed together thanks to those amazing So-Co fruity punch drinks at the Fader Sideshow. Oh, yes, Billy Bragg was in there. I sh*t you not. Nothing made sense. So without further adieu, I give you the Punkphoto CMJ 07 wrap-up. Behold the black whole that was last week:

Live Review: MATT & KIM/ FLOSSTRADAMUS/ ART GOBLINS @ Music Hall of Williamsburg by Leia J

Punkphoto - 37.jpg

Words and Photos by Leia Jospe

Plan on seeing The Hood Internet? I’d reconsider if I were you. When they took the stage at 10:15 (completely skipping over Art Goblins’ set), I was more interested in the underage sex party going on behind me than the actual music, which sounded like average mash-ups of overplayed songs. Minutes seemed like hours, and an hour seemed like an eternity. Finally, after numerous failed attempts at getting the crowd excited for Matt & Kim, The Hood Internet left the stage. Flosstradamus was next, doing a much better job than those before them. Flosstradamus mixed obscure songs with popular songs, enough to satisfy everyone. From hip hop to techno, they made time for everyone’s favorite sing-a-longs including Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back,” and Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So.” Flosstradamus had captivated the audience, the entire floor was moving. To excite the crowd for Matt & Kim’s set, they played their remix of “Yea Yeah” which Matt & Kim even came out and danced for.

We Can Only Hope Midnight Juggernaut’s Upward Trajectory Will Bend Back Towards NYC Stat!

mjuggernauts_3.jpg

So now is that time of year on the LES, post- CMJ marathon, where we lick our wounds, nurse a nasty malt-liquor/energy drink habit that we developed, and wean ourselves off of pizza and Mamoun’s. It’s when you look around and realize *CRAP* that the most amazing band you saw, or think you might have seen, is airborne over the Atlantic today and probs won’t be back until the new year. Ouch. There is nothing else to do than to give an inappropriately candy flavored booze shout out to the Midnight Juggernauts. These are the brilliant lads from Down Under that opened for Justice, you know, but with REAL instruments. If you aren’t on your knees thanking Jesus for solid cosmic electronic acts with actual basslines and drumkits well then you should be bitch smacked. Sorry. It’s my Sparks detox talking. It makes me say things. Keep an eye out for a Q&A on ‘Sup to come, & we have it on good authority (Koala pledge!) that they will be back.

Plus check out the vid for ‘Road to Recovery.’
