Live Review : Be Your Own PET Set the Roof On Fire at Maxwell’s NJ : Words & Photos by Leia J

Words and Photos by Leia Jospe
What words can be used to describe a Be Your Own PET show…chaotic, energetic, in-your-face high-powered dance extravaganza? Over too soon? This band proves that it doesn’t matter what age you are, you can still put on a great show. They put on one of the best live performances, made perfect for intimate venues. Jemima (vocals) and Nathan (bass) encouraged the audience throughout the entire (well, 30 minute or so long) set to loosen up and have a good time by running into walls, drum-sets, and each other. Although the show seemed to go by incredibly fast, BYOP’s performance leave you with bruises on your body and wanting more. See the rest of the review and shots after the jump!

Re: the openers- On at 9:30 (an hour after the show was originally supposed to start) Boy/Girl or Girl/Boy (it doesn’t really matter), slowly dragged their bodies onto the stage, expressionless, and unenthusiastic. With the lights turned down low and only one stage light set on the ground to create an “artistic” atmosphere, Boy/Girl awkwardly began what seemed like the first set they’ve ever played. The vocalist either whispered the entire song, or screeched for four minutes straight. My favorite part of their set was the awkward and stiff triangle playing in the middle of a song. I feel that if they were able to identify the midpoint between screech and whisper, they could pass as tolerable. The Jealous Girlfriends were the second supporting band, and what a relief! The female vocalist had a strong and soulful voice. The set seemed short, but sweet despite all the sound problems.
