Okay, first off: I have a secret. There is a whopping dose of prep in my background. As in, the worst thing I could tease my dad with was my desire to go to Yale, as it was the liberal opposite to the institution my fam has the legacy at- the legacy that ended with me. I ended up moving to Brooklyn instead and counted the stray box cutters, piles of glass and chicken bones I walked through every day on my way to art school. 10 years later I have to navigate over piles of puke in the East Village every morning. But at the end of the day, you’re dealing with someone that had a blazer collection at age 14. So for all the haters on BV writing these boys off as an ‘Ivy League’ band, shut up. Do something else with your time other than posting negative anony-comments. I will see your Patagonia fleece, raise you a pair of Maine Hunting Boots AND throw in a pair of Nantucket Reds whilst kicking your ass with a squash racquet. Because Vampire Weekend is really quite good, and if anyone gets to roll their eyes at anything remotely preppie it would be me. Ok. Big weight off my chest! I will hand it to you- homeboys sound like they were conceived as Graceland played in the background. Perhaps backstage at one of James Taylor’s fundraisers on Martha’s Vineyard. Perhaps this is how I found myself up to my ears in Columbia students and Barnard girls (many of them new to the venue) on the evening of Vampire Weekend’s record release (out on XL now!). Photo-wise there wasn’t much wiggle room, but completely worth it because they sound AMAZING live. I’m gonna let the lovely Julia Simon do a fabulous writeup on this here Vampire Weekend at Bowery Ballroom gig (fun with tagging there), and keep an eye peeled for a proper feature on ICM in the near future.
